The Golden Voice of Banaras Gharana

In the vast world of Indian classical music, where tradition meets timelessness, emerges the soulful voice of Swarn Vijh—a trained Hindustani classical and semi-classical vocalist whose journey is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and divine blessings.

Born into a family with no musical lineage, Swarn’s tryst with music began at the tender age of seven. Motivated by her parents, who recognized her potential early on, she was introduced to the rigorous yet rewarding world of classical training. Her parents, despite not being from a musical background, walked hand in hand with her, ensuring she found her footing in this demanding art form. His struggles and sacrifices, along with the unwavering support of her mother, paved the way for Swarn to pursue music as a profession.

Her destiny took shape under the guidance of Pt. Rajan and Pt. Sajan Mishra ji, legendary exponents of the Banaras Gharana, and Vidushi Shanti Hiranand ji, the senior disciple of Begum Akhtar ji. Gaining acceptance into their tutelage was no easy task—it took Swarn and her father months of persistence before her gurus recognized the spark within her. Once embraced, she immersed herself completely into the Guru-Shishya Parampara at The Viraam Gurukul, Dehradun, where six-hour-long practice sessions became her daily devotion.

Her relentless pursuit bore fruit. Swarn today stands as a Gold Medalist from Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy and Baba Hariballabh Sangeet Mahasabha, a graded artist of All India Radio, and a scholarship holder from Sahitya Kala Parishad and the Ministry of Culture. Her mellifluous performances have resonated across prestigious music festivals in Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar, Allahabad, Varanasi, Punjab, and beyond. She was also honored with the Girija Devi Puruskar for her melodious artistry.

Behind her achievements lies a strong pillar of support—her family. From her parents’ sacrifices to her husband’s encouragement, each step in her journey has been nurtured with love and strength. Swarn also acknowledges the role of well-wishers and mentors who introduced her to respected mehfils and platforms that shaped her as an artist.

Grateful to the almighty, Swarn reflects on her journey with humility: “There is still a long way to go.” Her eyes are now set on the future—where she envisions launching her own compositions and gracing more stages with the purity of her voice.
