The Unstoppable Journey of Urvashi Upadhyay

For nearly two decades, I have dedicated my life to the world of performance, carving a niche for myself in theatre and television. My journey began with a deep love for the stage, a passion that led me to win 39 prestigious awards—both national and international—by the age of 24. Theatre was not just a profession for me; it was my identity, and I became a well-respected and renowned figure in this realm.

One of the defining moments of my career occurred during the All India Drama Competition in Mumbai. As I performed with all my heart, little did I know that Shobhna Desai, a revered judge at the event, was taking note of my talent. The moment the show concluded, she approached me with an offer that would change my life forever. On the spot, she asked me to be a part of her television show Hamari Devrani on Star Plus. That instant marked the beginning of my smooth transition from theatre to television—without the grueling struggle many aspiring actors face.

However, the journey to reach that moment was anything but easy. My family initially disapproved of my involvement in theatre, and society was quick to criticize my mother for allowing me such freedom. Their words stung, and I found myself constantly battling to prove my worth—not just to my family but to an entire community that doubted my dreams. This period of struggle was the most challenging phase of my life.

But fate had a grand plan. When Hamari Devrani aired, my life transformed completely. In a poetic twist, its promo was released on my birthday, May 18—a symbolic rebirth of sorts. The very people who once ridiculed my ambitions now showered me and my family with praise. I became the first girl in my family to break barriers, pursue theatre, and ultimately, have a love marriage while still making a mark in the entertainment industry.

From a very young age, I found inspiration within myself. At just four years old, I performed in a Ram Leela, playing the role of Sita Mata. That experience left an indelible mark on me. Unlike today, where social media and various platforms provide inspiration, back then, there were few sources of motivation. But I firmly believe that true artists are born with their passion—they don’t need external validation to fuel their craft.

Currently, I am part of the television show Mangal Lakshmi, which premiered on February 27, 2023. I portray Mangal's mother-in-law, a role that carries a positive and impactful message for society. It’s a fulfilling experience to be part of a project that resonates deeply with audiences and promotes meaningful values.

Looking back, my journey has been filled with incredible achievements. The first play I ever performed in won me 11 awards—a moment that remains a cornerstone of my career. Additionally, completing a mini PhD stands as a significant milestone. Yet, beyond all professional accolades, my greatest accomplishment is being a mother to wonderful children. I firmly believe that the joy of helping others and bringing happiness into someone’s life is the ultimate achievement.

My academic pursuits have also played a crucial role in shaping my understanding of art and culture. I am in the final stages of completing my Master’s degree in Hinduism and Philosophy from Mumbai University, with my dissertation focusing on Indian Classical Dance and Hinduism. My future aspirations include pursuing a full-fledged PhD while continuing to work in television—but only for roles that truly excite and challenge me.

To the youth, my message is simple: never go against your family. Instead, convince them with your determination and dedication. Your family should always be your priority, and their support will be your biggest strength. Chase your dreams, stay resilient, and above all, believe in yourself—because true artists are not made; they are born.
