The Story Behind Mix Bag Tuesdays
It all began on an electrifying evening at the St. Joseph’s College Fest. The energy was infectious, the crowd alive — and on the console was none other than Rohit Barker, spinning tracks that had the audience completely under his spell. Amidst the cheers and music, one young attendee stood mesmerized. For them, it wasn’t just another performance — it was a moment of revelation.
"I went with a school friend who took me to the fest," they recall. "Seeing Rohit Barker for the first time changed something in me. The way he controlled the crowd, the smiles he brought to people’s faces — I just knew, this is what I wanted to do."
That night planted the seed of a dream: to become a DJ who could light up rooms with rhythm and keep hearts in sync with the beat. But like all great journeys, this one too began on the sidelines.
Breaking into the DJ scene wasn’t easy. “I was new, unknown, and often cornered. I wasn’t anyone’s first choice,” they share honestly. Yet, behind that modest exterior was a spark — a natural ability to read the room, feel the vibe, and keep the energy flowing. All they needed was a chance.
That chance came in the form of Asad Shariff from Beats Club, who offered a freelancing gig at 21st Amendment, Indiranagar. “The owners liked my set, and that gig became the start of my freelancing career as a DJ,” they say with a smile. It was the first beat in a bigger symphony.
However, the climb wasn’t smooth. A resident DJ position at Indigo XP, Koramangala turned into a bitter experience. “Every day was a challenge. I was constantly discouraged, never allowed to perform on the main stage. Even some guest DJs didn’t want me to grow,” they admit.
But true artists don't stop when the music fades — they create their own rhythm. Fueled by passion and perseverance, they launched Mix Bag Tuesdays, a unique night that soon became the place to be on a Tuesday in Bangalore. "Four of my friends helped bring in a good crowd. That consistency helped me make a mark. I was finally featured on Indigo Hot Mix — one of the biggest, longest-running radio shows in the world," they beam.
Their philosophy? Stay humble. Follow the trend. Be disciplined. Stay consistent. That’s the mantra that keeps them grounded and growing.
Looking ahead, the journey is far from over. “I’m working towards becoming a VDJ and producing my own music. My first mashup is coming out very soon!” they reveal. "I want to build more connections in the industry and step onto even bigger stages."
From being a student to performing for Mount Carmel College, from battling rejection to becoming a regular at some of Bangalore’s best venues, the story is still being written — beat by beat, stage by stage.
And if that night at St. Joseph’s was the beginning, the future holds a whole new rhythm of its own.
