Journey from Science to Singing Success
Since childhood, singing has been more than just a hobby for me; it is a divine gift for which I am immensely grateful. Growing up in Jaipur, amidst a family of achievers—my father and sister, both doctors, my mother, a dedicated homemaker, and my brother, deeply involved in the event industry—my journey into music had a rather humble beginning.
It all started with participating in school events. The first couple of times, I faced the sting of defeat, which left me disheartened. However, an unyielding urge to try again kept me going. Determined to improve, I would practice diligently on my terrace, singing in my full chest voice, allowing my throat to open and my passion to pour out. In the fifth grade, I finally tasted success, securing the first position alongside another talented friend. This victory marked a pivotal moment in my life, transforming singing from a mere interest into an all-consuming passion.
For the past 10-12 years, I have been performing live on stage. My journey began with small cafes and gradually expanded to performing across the world with my band. I cannot recall a single day in my life without singing or being immersed in music. It has been a constant companion through every phase of my life.
Despite my deep love for music, my father had different aspirations for me. He wanted me to pursue medicine and urged me to prepare for medical entrance exams. Respecting his wishes, I took coaching and prepared, even though my heart was set on music. Eventually, I pursued a degree in B.Tech Bioinformatics, balancing my academic pursuits with my musical passion. College provided me with a platform to showcase my talent through inter and intra-college competitions, further cementing my love for music.
After securing a placement in a scientific journal publishing company in Hyderabad, I worked as an assistant editor for a year. However, I soon realized that I could not envision a life devoid of music. Taking a leap of faith, I left my job and moved to Delhi to pursue Hindustani classical training at the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. This decision was met with concern and skepticism from my family, who worried about my financial independence and future stability.
Those initial days in Delhi were challenging. I had no clear roadmap for my musical career and was financially dependent on my father. Convincing my parents of my decision took time and perseverance, but their concerns eventually subsided when they saw my dedication and progress.
In my pursuit to earn a living while continuing my training, I sought part-time jobs. One such opportunity was teaching music to underprivileged children—an unpaid role. Initially disappointed by the lack of financial support, I soon realized the profound joy and fulfillment that came with the job. The experience was transformative, and destiny soon played its part when the foundation "Saskia & Shubhendra Rao Ji" recognized my work and offered me a full-time position as a music teacher at Mother's International School in Delhi. This was beyond anything I had ever imagined, given my lack of formal music qualifications.
For three years, I taught music, and the experience was enriching beyond words. My journey took another meaningful turn when I discovered Soka Gakkai Buddhism and began practicing the philosophy of the Lotus Sutra. This practice inspired me to explore music as a therapy tool, leading me to enroll in a music therapy training program in Delhi. The year-long program, coupled with an internship at Vimhans Hospital, allowed me to work with special needs children and adults suffering from conditions such as autism and schizophrenia. Using music as a healing tool was a life-changing experience that provided me with a sense of purpose beyond performance.
While balancing school teaching and clinical music therapy, an opportunity arose when a senior recommended me to a live band looking for a female vocalist. My first performance with the band was a turning point, opening doors to the live music circuit. However, stepping into the live performance scene came with its own set of challenges. As a female vocalist, I encountered both opportunities and obstacles, with people often offering unsolicited advice and trying to dictate my path. But with time and experience, I learned to embrace my art and stay true to myself.
Over the past decade, I have been fortunate to perform my own gigs and entertain audiences worldwide. My intention every time I step on stage remains the same—to bring joy and happiness to my audience.
Looking ahead, my aspirations revolve around continuing my musical journey while delving deeper into music therapy. I am determined to contribute to society through music, using it as a tool for healing and joy. I believe there is still much to achieve and explore, and I am grateful for every opportunity that has come my way.
Reflecting on my journey, I consider myself blessed to have worked as a music coach at Mother's International School, to have been a certified clinical music therapist, and to have performed on numerous stages, making people sing and dance along with me.
To the youth reading my story, I encourage you to explore your passions and talents wholeheartedly. In today's world, pursuing one's passion can lead to remarkable opportunities and respect. Following your heart brings forth incredible experiences and personal growth. I remain forever grateful for my family and music, which continue to shape my journey and fulfill my soul.
